The last time we checked, there were 54 letters. The trend is it grows every year. This is neither about being woke, being politically correct, nor about being in touch with Gen-Z: “what kids are making up these days”.
Instead, we know from personal experiences that we were born like this. Society just didn’t have a word for what we were born with. And now we have a name for it. So, it's like the periodic table, discovering Earth is not flat, mapping a new RPG game, or discovering new star clusters many lightyears away.
You didn’t remember it wrong, this used to all be called “gay”. In places like New York City, it was “the gay center”. And then it was LGBT+. And then LGBTQIA+. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus. Honestly, even people who are LGBTQIA+ themselves are confused. So if you don’t identify as LGBTQIA+, it’s really ok if you have no idea what to call this.
